TO PROVE TRANSPIRATION!!!!

Let see what is transpiration???

Materials:
Polythene bag
A recently watered plant
Rubber bands

Instructions
Keep the plant in direct sunlight.
Then cover the plant with polythene bag and tie the end near the base of the stem with the help of rubber band.
Leave it there for 3 to 4 hours.

Observe: You will observe tiny droplets inside the polythene bag!

What is happening??
This happens because of transpiration! What is transpiration? The process of giving out extra water by plants in the form of water vapour is known as transpiration! The water is given out by leaves.

THE EFFECT OF HEATING ON METAL!!!

Let's study the effect of heating on metal.

Materials:
Candle
Matches
Fire tongs or tweezers
A lock with a tight fitting key

Instructions

Put the key into the lock. The keep fits in properly.
Now put the key over the burning candle. Hold the key with the help of fire tongs or tweezers.
Put the key for 5 minutes.
Now try to fit the key back into the lock. What happens? Does the key fits?

What is happening??
Burning metal causes expansion of the metal. So the key expands and cannot fit into the key hole!
To fit the key back in follow the steps below:-
Leave the key indoor to cool it to room temperature.
After cooling try to fit the key into the key hole again. Does the key fits?

On cooling, the metal contract and returns to it's normal size, thus, it fits!!!

A MOTOR BOAT WITHOUT A MOTOR!!!

Let's make a boat which uses energy to move!!

Materials:
Plastic bottle with screw on cap
tissue paper
1 drinking straw
Scissors
Clay
1/2 cup vinegar
3 tablespoon baking soda

Instructions
Make a hole at the bottom of the bottle. Enough to put an straw through.
After making the hole put the straw in and seal the area around the straw with clay.
Bend the straw downwards.
Now put 3 tablespoon baking soda on a piece of tissue paper and roll it. After rolling twist the ends.
Pour 1/2 cup vinegar into the bottle and quickly screw on the cap and set it on water.
The straw should be underwater. The BOAT MOVES!

What is happening??
The reaction caused by baking soda and vinegar creates a gas. This gas will try to escape. The gas will find only one opening- THE STRAW!
So it escapes through it causing the boat to move forward!

HOW TO MAKE A SUNDIAL???

Why buy a watch when you can recycle materials and make a watch which would use solar energy!!

Materials:
A sturdy paper plate
Unsharpened pencil
Modeling clay
Compass
Black marking pen

Instructions
Make a hole through the back of the plate enough to fit the pencil in.
Place the end of the pencil in a lump of clay to anchor it down.
Place the plate out in an open area. Locate north with the help of the compass and tilt the pencil a bit to north (If you live in northern hemisphere then you should point the pencil to north, but if you live in the southern hemisphere then tilt the pencil towards south.)
At 8:00am locate the shadow of the sun. Keep doing this after every hour till the day ends.
The next day exactly 8:00am the shadow will be on the markings and you will know the time!!

BIRD IN OR OUT OF THE CAGE?????

Let's see what is afterimage???

Materials:
3X5 Note card
Tape
Pencil
Scissors
Colored pens

Rub the pencil very fast in your hand and you will be confused to tell if the bird was inside the cage or outside???

What Is Happening???

The effect is known as afterimage. This is a ability of our eye to see the images even after they are gone!! This is ability is know as afterimage!! When you spin the pencil you see the bird first than you rotate it very fast while you are seeing the bird the cage comes in focus and for this reason you think that the bird is in the cage!!!!!

To get the egg back put the bottle upside down push the egg aside and blow as hard as you can and put your and below the opening the egg will fall right into your hand!!!

HOW DOES THIS HAPPENS?????

This happens because of air pressure!!

CAUTION: Burning of paper should be done in ADULT SUPERVISION.

ICE STOPS THE WATER TO BOIL!!!

Let's see how to stop boiling water by a scientific way!!!

Materials:
Pot containing water
A stove
Many ice cubes

Instructions

Set the pot containing water on stove and turn the burner on high. When the water starts boiling add the ice cubes.

Observe: After you put the ice into the water it stops boiling. This is the Second Law Of Thermodynamics. This law means that the burner will first flow to the coldest object. So the burner makes the ice melt. While the ice is melting the water stops to boil. After the ice melts the water will start to boil again.

CAUTION: Boiling of water should be done in adult supervision.
